Pianist Vera Hui-Pin Hsu toured with Israel’s Haifa Symphony Orchestra in 2012 to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and performed brilliantly. This year Vera Hsu has organized her piano recital tour in Taiwan and Europe entitled, “Three B’s and Sung-Jen Hsu” to begin in June. Her debut was held at the Taichung Municipal City Huludun Cultural Center on June 21 with tickets priced at NT$200.

Based on the works of Professor Sung-Jen Hsu, the pianist recombined the compositions and intertwined them with those of the three world famous piano masters, Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. Through the prominent comparisons and interactions between contemporary and classic pieces, the audience was able to experience the similarities and differences of styles, elements, tunes and strains in addition to appreciating the beautiful melodies of the piano recital.

With the contrast created by blending Professor Hsu’s “Two Inventions” and “Capriccio” with the twelve-tone technique and Baroque style of Bach’s Italian Concerto, Vera Hsu successfully created a feeling of freshness. Apart from the traditional concerto performance, Vera Hsu interpreted Professor Hsu’s “Single-Chapter Concerto” with Scarlatti’s Keyboard Sonatas in modern musical vocabulary. Later, Professor Hsu’s romantic and elegant “Arabesque” was combined with Brahms’ composition, Opus 119. The new “Rondo” performed at the piano recital was another daring attempt by Professor Hsu to combine his own Oriental background with 20th century composing techniques.
