Life in a Traditional Market— Chang Lien-Hung Photography Exhibition

Chang Lien-Hung, a self-taught photographer based on Japanese entrepreneurial spirit, was selected for the Taichung Artists Relay Exhibition this year. From now until July 7, it will be held at the Huludun Cultural Center with the theme of " Life in a Traditional Market ” to record the common people's humanity and historical heritage of Taiwan. Viewers can scan the QR code on the title card of the work with their mobile phones and listen to the interviews and stories of the characters in the picture in real time, giving the public a diverse art exhibition experience.
For his “Life in a Traditional Market” street photography project, Chang Lien-Hung spent almost one and a half years traveling around Taiwan to take photos, capturing details that most people wouldn’t notice. The series also includes photos he took when he ventured deep into traditional markets in Japan and Vietnam a few years back. Besides capturing every moment, this exhibition also features candid interviews with market stall owners to explore their lives and YouTube links to these interview videos. Although in gradual decline, traditional markets boast touching stories. These stories are examples of diligence and perseverance, as well as stories of the ups and downs of life. These commendable experiences deserve to be passed down as inspiration for the younger generation.
The “Life in a Traditional Market” street photography series can be broken down into four major aspects: people or scenery, realistic or surreal style, simplistic aesthetics, or diverse and complex composition, and natural life or humorous creative content.
While working in Japan, Chang Lien-Hung laid a solid foundation of photographic knowledge by reading numerous professional photography books in Japanese and accumulated practical experience through street photography as he visited places in Taiwan and abroad, enabling him to present his art in diverse ways. With the theme "Life in a Traditional Market", this exhibition showcases the wonderful stories of Chang Lien-Hung's interactions with vendors as he visited traditional markets in different regions. The exhibition depicts things like the masterful knife skills of butchers at meat stalls, competitive sales in the fish market, and emotional human stories at vegetable stalls. Every photo demonstrates the priceless cultural heritage of traditional markets and the lifelong perseverance of hardworking vendors.
