Patchwork of Glory - Introspection upon Supercial Beauty:Watercolor Exhibition of Wei-Hsiang Tsai
Date: March 16 to April 15, 2018
Location: 2nd Floor Gallery II, Taichung City Huludun Cultural Center

Wei-Hsiang Tsai is a watercolor artist with strong roots in the Central Taiwan art community. He has maintained a steadfast commitment to the pursuit of aesthetic beauty, and has developed a unique style characterized by wide-ranging human subject matter and rich colors, attracting widespread plaudits within Taiwanese art circles. Tsai’s paintings have a poetic beauty and depth of meaning that has made them very popular with art collectors, and Tsai has become a veritable celebrity for art enthusiasts.

Wei-Hsiang Tsai won First Prize in the Watercolors section of the Provincial Civil Servants and Teachers Art Exhibition for three consecutive years, in 1993, 1994 and 1995, after which he was granted permanent exemption from preliminary screening for this competition. In2002,his work was selected for inclusion in the National Art Exhibition for five consecutive years. In 2016, Tsai’s “Languorous Island” was selected for inclusion in the Taiwan World Watercolor Competition & Exhibition. The many awards that he has won for his watercolors are a tribute to Tsai’s immense talent; they have also served to reinforce the important place that he occupies in art circles today.

Tsai paints places that people would normally not give a second glance to. By recording them with his paintbrush, he achieves a magical process of internalization, portraying subtle transformations of light and shadow, and even using the brushing technique to create a multi-layered, multi-dimensional sense of space; he is able to transform them into something abstract, so that the everyday becomes distinctive. The overall effect is to generate a sense of humanistic idealism that strikes deep into the human heart, endowing the world with a new kind of aesthetic vitality. Every one of Tsai’s works seems to be telling the viewer that we should be thankful for what we have. The significance of Tsai’s paintings far exceeds what they appear to show on the surface! In this exhibition – “Richness as Collage” – Tsai Wei-Hsiang undertakes reflection on self-awareness, using his paintbrush to “condense” the passage of time and demonstrating his intense attachment to culture in the creation of a eulogy for the beauty of the natural world that reflects his love for Taiwan, and that stresses the need for us to appreciate the world we live in.

We sincerely hope that as many people as possible will take the opportunity to come and experience this exhibition and what it has to show us about the beauty of human existence.
