Entranced by nature in clay for half a century, Chen-Chou Liou ceramics invitational exhibition creates a landscape of mind
Date:2026-09-19
Seeing inner landscapes through ceramic art, Taichung City Huludun Cultural Center presents “ART. Fengyuan 2026 Artist Invitational Exhibition - Landscapes of the mind: Chen-Chou Liou Ceramics Exhibition” from now through October 4. The exhibition invites Taiwanese contemporary ceramic artist Chen-Chou Liou to present highlights from half a century of creation, transforming mountains, clouds, mist, riverside waterscapes, bridges, and architecture into ceramic works. Viewers are invited to feel the distant beauty of mountains, rivers, clouds, and shadows, as well as inner landscapes shaped by coexistence and shared feeling with nature, within small pieces of clay.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government said ,Chen-Chou Liou studied in Kyoto, Japan in his early years. After returning to Taiwan, he taught for many years at National Taiwan University of Arts. As an artist, educator, and cultural promoter, he is an important figure in the development of contemporary ceramics in Taiwan. This exhibition presents Liou’s distinctive and original style, including the “Roaming the Mountains in Spirit” series, which places pathways, platforms, stairways, and square openings within simple block forms. His new work, “Phantasmagoric Space”, uses richly glazed block forms together with irregular and triangular spaces, creating a visual imagination of turning along a path and searching for a secluded realm.

Liou loves nature, and his work expresses his feelings for and cherishing of heaven and earth. He once said, “The peaceful and serene scenes of nature are like the restrained and desireless presence of a sage”. The eight-piece work “Secluded Paths in Deep Mountains” uses wood-firing techniques, leaving traces of smoke and fire as well as natural ash effects to depict winding mountain paths and layered forested peaks. His recent use of architectural elements brings the works closer to people’s living environments, expressing a deep artistic vision in which humanity, life, the spirit, and all things in heaven and earth come together.

Works in the “Riverside Landscape” series, such as “Pier” and “Bridge”, draw inspiration from Tamsui, where the artist lives. The rhythm of waves on the river and the scenery along the shore condense everyday views into poetic spaces. “Landscapes of the mind:Chen-Chou Liou Ceramics Exhibition” runs through October 4. Residents are warmly invited to visit Taichung City Huludun Cultural Center and enjoy Liou’s remarkable works, which bring together natural imagery, humanistic thought, and ceramic aesthetics.
