Former Town Mayor and Artist Lin You-Teh’s Lifelong Paintings Showcase a Century of Fengyuan’s Splendor
Date:2025-09-08
The accumulation and expression of local art reflect the depth and vitality of urban culture. Taichung City Huludun Cultural Center pays tribute to Fengyuan's local artistic giant with the “Lin You-Teh Commemoriative Exhibition.” From September 5 to October 5, we invite audiences into Lin You-Teh 's artistic life—a journey spanning education, politics, and painting, and offering the most tender gaze upon his hometown soil.
Deputy Director of Taichung City Government's Cultural Affairs Bureau, Shi Chun-fu, attended yesterday's (7th) opening ceremony and stated that Lin You -Teh was born in Fengyuan in 1911. While studying at Taipei Normal School, he was taught by Japanese painter Ishikawa Kinichiro, laying a solid foundation in watercolor techniques. Lin You -Teh served as Fengyuan's first and second town mayor, implementing bold reforms to construct roads, bridges, schools, markets, and other public infrastructure. He pioneered concentric road designs and elevated traffic efficiency through peripheral ring roads that balanced suburban development, laying the foundation for Fengyuan's future prosperity with remarkable political achievements.
Despite his busy political schedule, Lin never put down his paintbrush. He received numerous awards, was honored as one of Taichung County's Ten Outstanding Artists, and was selected for the inaugural “Taichung County Artists Relay Exhibition.” His works were exhibited at the Huludun Cultural Center 37 years ago. Now, they reunite with the public in a commemorative exhibition—both an echo of eight decades of artistic creation and a continuation of his artistic legacy.
Curator Zhuang Mingzhong explains that this commemorative exhibition comprehensively presents the artist's creative journey and the memories of his era. Works like “Farm Family” and “Gazing Afar” embody profound nostalgia for rural life and its warmth, while “Old Home in Fengyuan” uses winding paths as visual guides, inviting viewers to stroll back to those tranquil afternoons. “Siheyuan Courtyard,” “Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall,” and “Queen's Head” capture Taiwan's landscapes through outdoor sketching techniques. Vibrant greenery and flowers illuminate the gray-brown architecture, conveying life aesthetics and humanistic care.

Whether capturing rice fields at dawn, ancient dwellings at dusk, or bustling streets woven with crowds and everyday life, Lin You-Teh immortalizes these scenes with delicate, refined brushstrokes. We invite you to step into Lin You-Teh 's pictorial world on an autumn afternoon. Through this journey of conversing with the city and encountering the past, experience the gentle strength that defines Taichung.
