Art Without Borders: "Double-Specialized Students" Showcase Diverse Talents
Date:2025-08-11
A group of children with dual exceptionalities in giftedness and special education express their unique talents through art, transcending academic status , national borders, and boundaries of imagination. Co-hosted by the Huludun Cultural Center and the Yi Qi Fei Dual Exceptional Education Center, the exhibition titled "Friendship Beyond Categories and Boundaries—A Cross-National Collaborative Art Exhibition by Dual Exceptional Students" will be held from August 8 to August 31. It features creative works by dual exceptional students from Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, and other regions, showcasing an unprecedented cross-disciplinary artistic dialogue.
The Huludun Cultural Center explains that "dual exceptional" refers to children who are both gifted and have special education needs. Gifted education teacher Lai Yingxiu founded the Yi Qi Fei Dual Exceptional Education Center in 2017, motivated by the fact that dual exceptional children are often overlooked due to the "masking effect" within mainstream education systems. This year marks the center's first international-scale exhibition, enabling students from diverse cultures to connect through collaborative creation and helping the public recognize that every unique talent deserves to be acknowledged.
Lai Yingxiu highlights that the theme of this exhibition is "City Lights," showcasing cross-disciplinary creations by gifted and twice-exceptional students. Each piece captures the most authentic expressions of life. "Green River Street Scene" focuses on the Taichung Green River basin, incorporating city landmarks such as Miyahara Ice Cream, Taichung Park, and ASEAN Square, embodying Taiwan’s local character and cultural warmth. "Harbor Night View" portrays the Tamsui cruise ship, Taipei 101 fireworks, and Pingxi sky lanterns. These two works unite 60 special education students from Hong Kong, collaborating to create a 270-centimeter-wide day-and-night scenic collage that vividly illustrates the intertwined and dynamic urban landscapes of both regions.
The artwork "Dragon Soaring Among the Clouds—Riding the Wind" depicts a divine dragon flying through the clouds, symbolizing the courageous and soaring spirit of children with special needs. A special opening ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, August 17th, inviting distinguished guests to join in creating an imaginative art world titled "Different, Taking Flight" together on-site.
