Huludun Recital Hall Reopens with Major Upgrades - Chio-Tian Folk Drums & Art Troupe Provides Lively Welcome!
Date:2025-07-20
After a year of anticipation and transformation, one of Taichung’s most culturally iconic landmarks—the Huludun Cultural Center Recital Hall—officially reopened today (19th) with the powerful performance “Drumming Blessings to Shake the Heavens and Earth” by the Chio-Tian Folk Drums & Art Troupe. With an investment of nearly NT$50 million, the Taichung City Government’s Cultural Affairs Bureau has carried out comprehensive seismic reinforcements and upgraded the air conditioning system. Repositioned as a safer and more comfortable family-friendly theater, the renovated Recital Hall is poised to become a new landmark for arts and cultural development in the mountain districts of Taichung.
The grand reopening began with a captivating performance by the Chio-Tian Folk Drums & Art Troupe, followed by the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra’s children’s theater production “The Penguin and the Red Rooster,” which combines picture book storytelling with music. These performances filled the hall with joy and sentiment as audiences of all ages witness the rebirth of the venue. According to Director Chen Chia-chun of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the renovation is not only a physical upgrade, but also a reimagining of the venue’s cultural identity and spatial function. The new theater has been transformed into a modern, professional, and accessible space, poised to become a central hub for arts and culture in the mountain region. Furthermore, the upcoming opening of the Green Museumbrary at the end of the year will continue to showcase the results of Taichung’s deep-rooted cultural development and the city’s ever-growing artistic energy. Together, the Huludun Cultural Center and the Green Museumbrary will usher in a new chapter of cultural advancement for the mountain districts of Taichung!
The Huludun Cultural Center noted that the renovation project began in July of last year, focusing on multiple improvements to the Recital Hall, including seismic reinforcement of the structure, upgrades to the air conditioning system, restroom renovations, and optimized circulation flow throughout the venue. Among the most eye-catching highlights is the newly installed large-scale art piece in the soaring lobby space. Created by artist Shih Chia-hsiang, the art piece blends the rhythm of musical notes with imagery inspired by the woodcraft traditions of the mountain region, embodying the rich essence of Taichung’s craftsmanship culture. The result is an immersive spatial aesthetic—“a visible symphony one can walk into.”
To celebrate the reopening of the theater, a two-week “Opening Arts Week” will be held from July 19 to August 3. The program features a series of carefully curated concerts, children’s theater performances, and arts workshops in collaboration with the center’s resident groups, including the Open Theater Group and the Dajia Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. In addition, a summer public piano experience will debut at the Huludun Cultural Center. From a child’s first encounter with live theater to intergenerational musical enrichment, the event offers something for everyone. All citizens are warmly invited to take part.
