Silence is More Powerful Than Sound: Golden Bell Award-Winning Artist Wu Xue-Mong Showcases the Strength of Stillness Through Ink Wash Painting
Date:2025-06-27
In the silent passage of time, he expresses the weight of his soul through brush and ink. Ink painter Wu Xue-Mong has been selected for the Taichung Artist’s Relay Exhibition and will present “The Luminous Ink – Wu Xue-Mong’s Ink Painting Exhibition” at the Huludun Cultural Center from June 27 to July 27. This exhibition combines brushwork, artistic expression, ink wash, and vibrant color approaches to foster a dialogue about life!
According to the Huludun Cultural Center, Wu Xue-Mong, who lost his hearing due to illness in childhood, demonstrated exceptional artistic talent and rose to prominence while studying in the Department of Fine Arts at Chinese Culture University, receiving numerous art awards. In addition to his achievements in painting, he has dedicated nearly 40 years to sign language education and was honored with the Golden Bell Awards for Best Host in Educational and Cultural Program. Bridging the fields of art and language, he embodies a life that is “silent yet abundant.” His works are characterized by the use of deep, intense colors applied in layered washes, conveying powerful visual impact and energy—an artistic expression of openness and resilience in the face of adversity.
“Though I have lived without sound since childhood, the keen eyes gifted by God have allowed me to perceive the vibrant life and sounds within nature,” Wu Xue-Mong remarked. He believes that ink wash can compose melody, and color can reflect the brilliance of life. In works such as Life in Solitude, the Gaze of the Egret, whether through the nuanced interplay of black-and-white ink, the pure and expressive use of color, or the vivid vitality of the natural world, he creates a serene and timeless atmosphere. Beneath the seemingly silent and solitary imagery lies a rhythm of life—offering a remedy for the soul amidst the busyness of modern society.
The work Seeking Serenity and the Sound of Waterfalls captures the grandeur of Iguazu Falls, allowing viewers to experience the awe-inspiring power of nature. Aspiration of the Swan pays tribute to the renowned artist Fan Kuan, reflecting a dialogue between personal ambition and the eternal majesty of mountains and rivers. Throughout the exhibition, Wu Xue-Mong’s deeply saturated palette reveals an inner emotional landscape. Amid the interplay of composure and intensity, he transforms solitude into a source of healing energy, inviting viewers to find stillness and reconnect with themselves.
