10 Taiwanese Craft Masters Gather at Huludun: Stunning Masterpieces of Bamboo Weaving, Glass Art, and Sword Making on Display!
Date:2025-04-25
From April 25 to May 25, 2025, the Taichung City Huludun Cultural Center is hosting “The Art of Craftsmanship–Creations by Members of the Taiwan Crafts Workshop Association” exhibition. Featuring 30 outstanding creations from 10 master artisans, the exhibition covers a wide variety of crafts—ranging from bamboo weaving and glass art to textile dyeing, twined flower art, patchwork, and metal craftsmanship. Through vibrant and diverse displays, the event offers visitors a chance to appreciate the unique charm of Taiwanese craftsmanship, where tradition meets innovation!
Organized by Taichung’s Cultural Affairs Bureau, this exhibition marks a milestone as its first-ever collaboration with the Taiwan Crafts Workshop Association—a group of top artisans officially recognized by the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute. Among the exhibition’s standout works is Abundance by National Crafts Achievement Award winner Chang Hsien-Ping. Ingeniously crafted from rattan bark and core using a single-spiral technique, the piece takes the form of a shallow dish reminiscent of a pond, which is awe-inspiring.
Among the most exceptional pieces on display is a masterfully crafted sword by Chen Yuan-Fang, Taichung’s recognized preserver of traditional sword-making. His work, Nepalese Royal Sword, revives a nearly lost art with complex multi-layer welding, geometric designs, and a blend of woodwork, metalwork, leather carving, and lacquer. The sword’s flawless, mirror-smooth finish radiates the powerful presence of Acala of Mahayana Buddhism. Also featured is Holding Light, Roasting Shadows by Lin Fang-Shih—a luminous glass artwork shaped through cutting, glazing, and heat-forming. Through the piece’s delicate dance of brightness and shade, Lin captures the fleeting nature of life and his longing for his late father.
Also on display is Floral Offering to Mazu by Chou Hsiu-Hui, a winner of the AQS QuiltWeek in the United States who creatively fuses Beigang’s cultural elements with mosaic quilting. Meanwhile, as a bamboo weaving preserver, Chiu Chin-Tuan brings ancient elegance of urn to life with Heart to Heart, a piece featuring chrysanthemum-colored weaving that forms heart-shaped bamboo motifs. Visitors can also find Lin Chieh-Yi’s Ties of Fate (Circle) Series, a textile-dyeing collection, as well as Lin Pei-Ying’s Graceful Shadows in Bloom, a twined flower creation. Both employ innovative techniques that offer a fresh visual experience.
