Chang Chih-hung, who has been immersed in the art of calligraphy for over 50 years, is exhibiting his works under the theme“ A Grand Gathering of Prosperity and Joy” in the Taichung Artists Relay Exhibition, featuring lyrical and freehand calligraphic lines in large brushstrokes, as well as innovative works of calligraphy using lacquer panels, leather, enameled panels, and technological screens, etc. The exhibition is on display at the Huludun Cultural Center from April 18th to May 18th. We invite everyone to that blends the traditional meanings of calligraphy with the styles of the present day.
According to the Huludun Cultural Center, Chang has been dedicated to teaching calligraphy for nearly 40 years and has made outstanding contributions to the advancement of calligraphy education. He learned to write regular script from his family when he was a child, and has studied under many famous calligraphers, specializing in various styles of calligraphy such as seal script, clerical script, running script and cursive script. He is good at wielding large strokes to produce large, equal-sized characters, and his works of cursive script are magnificent and shocking, while his works of small regular script in the style of Ouyang Xun are neat and agile, demonstrating his profound skills.
When recalling the process of learning calligraphy, Chang Chih-hung mentioned that when he was a child, he had to write several pieces of Yan Zhengqing’s regular script every day, and his father corrected them late at night after the clothing store closed, until the first grade of junior high school, when his father passed away due to illness. His father's encouragement and remembrance became the driving force for him to continue to improve his calligraphy, and he also gained self-confirmation from his practice as he won numerous awards. He breaks through the limitations of the traditional medium of calligraphy and combines it with modern life, such as inking on leather and then embossing the characters to create an amazing relief “three-dimensional calligraphy” with a sense of linearity.
In addition, Chang Chih-hung creates “Enamel Calligraphy” by writing on steel plates with enamel glaze and then firing it at high temperature. He also combines LED lights, laser engraving and other technological elements to design the “Artistic Cultural and Creative Screen”, which integrates the aesthetics of calligraphy into the home space and opens up a new form of expression of the traditional art.
