Feminine Power in Steel Art: Chu De-Hua’s Mesh Sculptures Redefine Urban Aesthetics
Date:2025-04-11
Delicate artistry blossoms in the rigid world of steel! The Taichung Artist's Relay Exhibition presents “Flow of Space, Wander of Light - Sculpture Exhibition by Chu De-Hua.” Chu De-Hua, one of Taiwan’s few female steel sculptors, breaks through the limits of traditional sculpture to craft geometric 3D works using stainless steel mesh. The exhibition runs between April 11 and May 11. Welcome to experience the captivating play of light and shadow.
According to the Huludun Cultural Center, Chu De-Hua, born in South Korea, graduated from National Taiwan Normal University with a fine arts degree and pursed her education in France and Australia. As one of Taiwan’s few female steel sculptors, Chu defies convention—she taught herself spot welding and uses stainless steel mesh to shape unique geometric sculptures. Her pieces captivate viewers with their beauty, revealing intricate layers of light and line from different angles.
Chu De-Hua shares, “I’m fascinated by the iron window grilles commonly seen in Taiwan—they seemingly reflect the paradoxical relationship of closeness and distance in modern urban life.”. She ingeniously turns these everyday elements into art, creating dynamic steel mesh sculptures filled with tension and interwoven lines. In her “Grid Series,” the solidity and penetrability of steel mesh create a shifting flow of space. Meanwhile, her “Ladder Series,” created in the wake of her parents’ passing, uses ladders to link spaces—symbolizing life’s ongoing journey and the exploration of the unknown.
In her “Flower Series,” Chu De-Hua softens rigid steel mesh, shaping it into delicate, origami-like blooms that seem to pulse with life. These works challenge both one’s physical strength and technical skills. Her “Triangle & v Series” and “Door & Frame Series” allow viewers to experience the shifting illusions that change with every angle through intricate structures and designs, along with penetrating light.
The “Flow of Space, Wander of Light - Sculpture Exhibition by Chu De-Hua” is more than a display of Chu’s sculptural finesse—it’s a deep reflection of life and environment that worth visiting and experiencing.
