With over 4 decades of experience in ceramic art, Jung-you Tsai only started learning the craft at the age of 32. Nonetheless, second year into his career, he was nominated to attend the International Competition of Contemporary Ceramic Art in Italy for 4 years in a row. In 1979, Mr. Tsai held an exhibition at the Spring Gallery in Taipei, becoming the first ceramic artist to hold a solo exhibition at a professional art gallery in Taiwan. At the time, all of his 300-odd creations were sold out. The diligence and talent of Mr. Tsai allowed him to become one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 1983 with his achievements in ceramic art. The colorful glazes of his ceramic artworks are complemented by diverse designs. Being a modest, humble individual, Mr. Tsai’s creations embody his understated yet extraordinary personal qualities; as a result, he received the National Crafts Achievement Award in 2011 to become an iconic figure in the contemporary Taiwanese ceramic art circle.
During the artwork selection process for this exhibition, Mr. Tsai took the harmony between glaze color and overall aesthetics into deliberate consideration to choose 60 artworks categorized according to 4 major themes: “Glaze Color”, “Design”, “Tolerance” and “Wood-fired”. Spanning the period from 1977 to 2015, these artworks portray diverse creativity. The exhibition is not only the embodiment of Mr. Tsai’s devotion to ceramic art over the years but also encompass his consistent artistic philosophy and the attitude of self-demand. In particular, the “Tolerance” collection is the culmination of 6 years of endeavors by Mrs. Tsai, who applied low temperature and high temperature kiln firing to create the free-flowing appearance of the thick layers of glaze that not only complements but also completes the ceramic body underneath, resulting in the astonishing effect.
